A Morning Bike Ride
Afternoon at the Beach

November 15, 2003
Fort Lauderdale Trip Day 8

A Morning Bike Ride

We slept in on Saturday, having been out late the night before, and just after getting some early lunch we went for a bike ride along the beach. You've probably seen our route before- at least over to the beach. Just up to Las Olas and then straight east to the beach. We biked north to the end of the beach, about a half-mile north of Sunrise Blvd., and then turned around to return to Sunrise. We planned to go and ride through Hugh Taylor Birch State Park as well.

After we turned around and headed south, I made three movies as we rode along. Making movies while I ride my bike might look dangerous, and I guess if I had to stop extremely suddenly, it might well be, but I am extra careful to look out for hazards and, of course, I don't hold the camera up to my eye or anything; I just hold it out in front of me. I can turn it from side to side without taking my eyes off the road and what's around me. That's also why the narration is pretty simple; I don't want to be thinking about that AND holding the camera AND watching what's going on.

As is the case with movies made while bike riding or while it is windy, there is a good deal of interference with the wind moving across the small microphone, so I apologize for the sound quality. Anyway, I have marked the approximate locations where these movies were taken on the aerial view at left, where our route is also marked. Keep in mind that these were taken as we were heading south. You can watch the movies with the players below:

Movie 1 (M1)

Movie 2

Movie 3

Movie 4

We turned right on Sunrise and went a short ways down the street to the entrance to the State Park. We've been here before, but it has been a while. We paid our $1 entry fee and then headed north along the one-way road that leads through the park. It was nice and shady in most places, as the afternoon was actually warm. Along the way, I filmed a movie as we were heading north along the park road, almost to the northern end of it, and you can watch that movie with the player at left.

Then the road turns across the top of the park heading over to the Intracoastal Waterway, and I took another movie as we rounded that curve (M5). When the road reaches the Intracoastal, there is a large parking lot for picnickers, and I pulled into that parking in plenty of time to get set up to make a movie as Fred caught up with me (M6). You can watch both these movies with the players below:

Movie 5

Movie 6

We stopped here for a little while so we could walk the bikes over to the Intracoastal Waterway and sit down and relax. There is a soda machine at the little shelter here, and we got a couple and savored them as we watched the activity on the channel. I made one movie here, panning across the Intracoastal (M7) from south to north. You can watch that movie with the player below:

Movie 7

In my narrative, I mention being on the Water Bus "yesterday," when it was actually much earlier in the week. Chalk it up to how time flies down here. I also took just one picture, of the modernistic house (P1) cantilevered out over the water that I mentioned in the movie. Earlier in the week, while riding on the Water Bus, we found out that this particular house, which can be reached off A1A but not from the park, is a famous backdrop or setting for photo shoots. We also found out that it is the house in Fort Lauderdale that is cantilevered over a public waterway. The reason was, apparently, that the part of the Intracoastal over which the house projects was actually part of the Birch holding, and when his estate deeded the park to the city, part of the agreement was that the house could be built out to the end of the property line. Or something like that.

Well, once we got going again, I made a series of movies as we biked along, and I have marked their approximate locations on the aerial view above, right. You might at least want to watch a couple or three of these to get an appreciation for what the State Park was like. I might suggest Movie 9, Movie 12 and Movie 14, at least. Anyway, here are the players for all the movies:

Movie 8: Along the Intracoastal

Movie 9: Along the Intracoastal

Movie 10: The Intracoastal Waterway

Movie 11: The Intracoastal Waterway

Movie 12: Some Excellent Filmmaking

Movie 13: Turning for the Entrance

Movie 14: Leaving the Park

We followed our normal route for the rest of the way home, where we cooled off and refreshed ourselves to head over to the beach to meet Brad.

Meeting Brad at the Beach

We drove back over to the beach to meet up with Brad and his friend Todd who were at Sebastian Street Beach (naturally), enjoying their weekend in Fort Lauderdale. We just sat and chatted with them for a while, and I took a few pictures. Use the links below to take a look at these three pictures:

An hour or so later, we returned to the condo for a frozen drink, and went to the Floridian for dinner. Then we went out again for our last night here.
