On this particular weekend, while Fred was opening the greenhouses on Saturday morning, I occupied myself guiding his DR Field and Brush mower through part of the pasture. His riding mower had been out of commission for a few weeks, and the pasture had gotten so high it just had to be mowed even before we got the riding mower back. I kind of enjoy using the mower, and Fred took this picture shortly before noon just after he returned from the greenhouses. The mower is self-propelled and cuts a fairly wide swath (wider than a typical lawnmower), and it also cuts the reedy weed Scebosa that has taken over parts of the pasture.
In the early afternoon, I used the mower up by the house as well; the grass gets high very quickly over the septic field, and I had to go slowly to get it cut. It was so thick that Fred had to rake some of it up to take to the brush pile; if he didn't, then the next time we mowed it would be that much harder. So just as I am finishing mowing for a while, Fred snapped a picture of the pickup truck full of clippings.
While I was putting the mower away to take a break for lunch, Fred found some of the local wildlife in one of his flowering bushes- doing what the local wildlife usually do. The grasshoppers were not a nuisance this year; each year we wonder if this will be one of the years, like 2005, when they eat everything in sight.
I did some more mowing later in the day while Fred worked in his rose beds, and then he went to close the greenhouses while I did a stint on the exercise bike. When he returned, we got cleaned up and went to Sherman to have dinner with Chris Young.
