My Niece Jeffie Visits Dallas

My niece Jeffie surprised me the day after we returned from Florida with the news that she was going to a trade show in Austin and that she would be coming through Dallas to see me, her grandmother and her other friends. I hadn't heard from her much since she moved to Atlanta with Michael, so her visit was a welcome one. She arrived on Tuesday, but wasn't able to come by my house until the afternoon. We went over to the Bentley Manor so she could spend some time with her grandmother.

I think Jeffie was concerned with the change in her grandmother since she left Dallas over a year ago, even though I warned her that there had been a great deal of change in my mom. But she displayed a great deal of enthusiasm for meeting and conversing with her grandmother. At dinner, mom enjoyed Jeffie's company, as this picture of the two of them shows.

Jeffie was really good about trying to have a conversation with mom, and you can see a movie of the two of them talking if you use the player at right.

I must admit that Jeffie handled talking with mom better than I do, but perhaps that is because I try to do it almost every day, and it wears on me not to be able to understand much of what she says but have to respond as if I do.

Back in mom's room after dinner, she and Jeffie seemed really to be having a good time, and I have two good pictures of them. To see the full-sized pictures, just click on the thumbnails below:

I suppose the big news that Jeffie wanted to deliver to her grandmother was that she was going to be married to Michael in June, 2006. That was one of the reasons why she wanted to stop in Dallas- if only for a short while- to tell her grandmother that news. Back in mom's room, we tried to have something of a conversation about that, or as much of a conversation as mom could deal with. You can see and listen to that conversation in the back-to-back movies using the players below:

Jeffie was emotional about mom on the way home, as I thought she would be. Mom is not nearly the person she was even a year ago. Healthwise, she seems to be on a steady plateau; I think that she will last until she has an accident of some kind. But mentally, she has gotten so slow, and lost so much capacity, that it is sometimes- oftentimes- painful to watch. In any event, I was glad that Jeffie had this time with her mom.

Jeffie had to leave for Austin the very next morning, so I took her to the airport. I got some good pictures at her departure; to see the full-sized images, just click on the thumbnails below:

NOTE

During Jeffie's visit, I took a good many more pictures and movies of my mother, and these have been placed on the album page entitled "Olga Dougherty: Pictures for 2006." This page can be accessed from the 2006 Index page, but if you would like to go and see the other pictures that I took during Jeffie's visit and then return to this page, please click here.
