The Birthday Party for Ron and Fred

Well, it's that time once again to celebrate the birthdays of Fred, who turns 49 on August 6th, and Ron M., who turned 40 on August 1st. As he has so graciously done in the past, Jay has offered to host a combined birthday party for his partner Ron and my partner Fred. And, also as we have done in the past, all of our Dallas and Sherman friends have been invited- and almost every one of them has showed up.

You will be seeing a number of pictures starring these attendees, so perhaps I can just run down the list:

Fred Nabors, one of the birthday boys
Ron M., one of the birthday boys
 Myself
 Jay, Ron's partner
Lou, our friend from Oak Cliff
Lynne, our friend from Dallas and the Arts
 Trish, a friend of Lynne's
 Richard, a friend of Lynne's
 Ron D., our long-time friend
  and
 Leroy, Ron Drew's friend

I am always thankful when Ron and Jay want to use their house for these gatherings- particularly in the summer, since they have a pool. But they also have a lot of space for people to wander around in and a pool table for all us hustlers to use. But I think they also like to host for another reason, and it is a practical one. Both of them like their Jim Beam and Coke and by hosting the party they can consume as much as they want to since they aren't faced with driving home from my house. So our tradition is that these two birthdays, and Jay's are spent at Ron's house while my own birthday party is held at mine.

As I said, one of the nice things about Ron's house is that they have a pool table. Ron, Jay and I are the most avid players, although Fred plays as well. While people were arriving, Ron, Fred and I played a few games.

Before dinner, I took quite a few pictures of the assemblage and various members of it; Fred took some as well. You don't need much narrative to put the pictures into context; they are simply candid shots taken while people were in conversation or doing something to get the dinner ready.

So, first, I have put some thumbnails and short captions for the pictures we took below; click on the thumbnails to view the full-size images:

I also took a few movies before dinner. Unfortunately, the light wasn't very good so they are kind of dark, but I wanted to include them nevertheless. You can use the players below to watch them:

Fred got some excellent group shots, and I won't bother naming everyone since you've seen them all before. But I've put thumbnails for these group shots below; just click on them to view the full-size images:

Jay did himself proud putting things together. While people were arriving, he had his usual spread of hors d'oeuvres out (and they always fill me up before dinner). Before dinner was ready, everyone either stood around and yakked or played pool or sat outside. I was pressed into service to take care of the the patio grill while Jay and Ron worked in the kitchen. But right on schedule everything was ready, and, in an effort to get people off their duffs and into the kitchen to partake of the buffet, Ron helped himself first.

The highlight of the evening, of course, is "The Presentation of the Cake." Once Jay got the candles lit, he brought the cake in with much pomp and circumstance. You can watch the movie of the cake presentation using the player at left.

We all had a wonderful time, and again my thanks to Ron and Jay for hosting!
