New England Trip Day 1
Getting to Providence, RI
Our trip to New England began with a flight from Dallas to Boston through Atlanta on Saturday morning. To get the cheapest fare, we flew on Air Tran. I dislike flying any airline other than American, since my Platinum status gets me treated much better, but the American fare to Boston was another three or four hundred dollars per couple, so to save money we took Air Tran.
When we got to Logan Airport in Boston about 4:30, we headed over to Enterprise to pick up our car. We got a GMC Terrain for the week, and it gave us plenty of room. We headed out of the airport and south towards Providence, Rhode Island.
From the airport, we took the Massachusetts Turnpike west to I-95 south, passed the old headquarters of Culinet Corp., and continued south on I-95 towards Providence. Near Walpole, we got off the expressway onto US 1 South to try to find someplace to stop and eat. We were of a mind to find a typical northeastern diner but as is so often true, when you want something, you can't find it, but when you don't, you pass one ever five minutes.
We stopped and asked locals, but got no good recommendation. Finally, in South Walpole, we ran across the Red Wing Diner, so we pulled in to eat. While the food was good, the service was abominable. The waitress got the order wrong and brought out the food for each of us separately rather than our table all at once. We ended up complaining vociferously, and the manager tried to make it up with a free dessert, but the experience wasn't at all what we had hoped for.
Since Providence was the first state capitol that we were going to visit, and since we would spend Sunday doing stuff either around the Providence area or perhaps on Cape Cod, I thought that staying our first two nights outside Providence would be a good idea. I made reservations at a Best Western near the Providence airpor in Warwick, Rhode Island.
To get there, we continued south on US 1 until it merged back into I-95 (the two marked roads intertwine with each other all the way to Miami). We continued south past downtown Providence and to the turnoff for the airport. This spur took us to Post Road (the local name for US 1 in this area), and the Best Western was right there.
We got a nice room at the hotel, quite big enough for all four of us, and I knew from making the reservation that there would be a full breakfast as well.
After a long day of travel, we turned in for the night.
