Return to the Index for Our Panama Canal Cruise |
As has been the case on our previous sea days, we are using today to rest up from prior days' activities. Going through the Panama Canal was a long day, and any day with a shore excursion takes a lot out of you. It was nice to be able to sleep in and then go have a leisurely breakfast with the guys.
While we are doing our activities today, the Oosterdam is cruising out from Panama City into the Pacific, and then turning northwest to follow the coastline to the Gulf of Nacoya in Costa Rica. We will be docking a ways into that gulf tomorrow morning.
After breakfast, Fred, Paul, Greg and I met in the card room to work on our bridge skills, and we played until about one o'clock. Then we broke for lunch and did some strolling around the ship. We saw a few interesting things at sea today. First, it is unusual for us to see other ships; they usually try to stay well apart from each other- like airplanes in the air. Today, however, we were passed fairly closely by a container ship going in the opposite direction. Going up the Central American coast, we will never be very far from land- not like crossing the ocean. Because of that, we saw birds most days, like the ones that were around the ship most of today. Fred took some interesting pictures of them, and if you click on the thumbnail images below, you can see some of them:
In the afternoon, we played RummiKub with Steve Riggs and Gary Thurman, the two guys we met earlier in the cruise who have a house in Fort Lauderdale. (Actually, we saw the two of them later in the evening having a drink in the Ocean Bar. I happened to have my camera with me from the evening show, and so I snapped a picture of them. You can see that picture here.
The only other picture of note we took today was a very nice picture Fred got just before we went to the Fitness Center of a boat in the sunset.
I believe this was another evening with the other four guys in the Vista Dining Room, and after that Fred and I went to the variety show that brought back the performers from the last three days.
Two nights ago, we missed a show in the Vista Lounge so we could have dinner with the guys and go to a movie instead. Tonight, the performer we missed, Bob Brizendine, is appearing again along with last night's Antonio Salci. Here is the Daily Program billing for Bob Brizendine:
"Like no other show you may have seen before, Bob Brizendine takes comedy, magic, and a little insanity and mixes them together to make a show that amazes and amuses. Bob has used his quick wit and expertise in sleight of hand to entertain audiences around the world for the past 12 years. Bob's distinctive style, high energy, and interaction with the crowd will leave you gasping for air between laughs, and still wanting more. bob is known around the world as one of the funniest acts performing today. After his show, you will realize why Bob is known as 'The World's Greatest Showoff.'" |
First up this evening was Bob Brizendine. While it seemed to me as if the blurb in the Daily Program turned out to be a bit of hyperbole, he certainly was entertaining. Some of the magic he performed was quite amazing.
Most of the things that Brizendine did were too lengthy for a movie (and the laughs were not quite non-stop). So I just took a short clip of his performance as a fire-swallower (and a couple of good jokes). |
Next up this evening was a repeat performance by Antonio Salci. His performance was similar to, and as good as, last night's.
I made this movie of one of Salci's selections the melody of which was very familiar but whose name I can't pull up. If you know what it is, email me and I'll add the name here. |
