A Morning Walk in Copenhagen

We had a good breakfast at the hotel (this is a feature of European hotels- a full breakfast buffet) and decided to head out to the train station to take a trip to Malmo, Sweden. On the way, we walked down some streets we hadn't traversed before, and our route led us down a street that went through a cultural building (a symphony hall, I think). As we passed underneath the arch of the building over the narrow street, we looked up and found that the ceiling of the arch had been beautifully painted. And as we passed out from under the arch and looked back (as you can see in one of the pictures below), we saw that three frieze statues had been carved into the side of the building above the arch.

As we passed around in front of the building, we stopped to take some additional pictures, and if you will click on the thumbnail images below, you can look at them:

Around in front of what we think was a symphony hall, we paused to take some pictures of the statuary in front. As we were doing so, a group of uniformed youngsters who had been milling on the corner formed themselves into a marching band, struck up some music, and then passed in front of us on their way around the east side of the square. What they were for and why they were marching around on a weekday morning is anyone's guess. But this is the movie I made of them.

A Side Trip to Malmo, Sweden

This morning we plan to take a trip by train to the town of Malmo, Sweden, which is across the narrow straits (the Oresund) between the North Sea and the Baltic. For ease of organization, I have put our trip to Malmo on its own album page. Although you can access this page from the Index for our vacation, it would be more logical to follow us to Malmo right now. If you will click on the Malmo link below, you will be taken to the page for that side trip, and at the top and bottom of that page you will find links that will bring you back to Copenhagen, just as we returned later today.

MALMO, SWEDEN

Welcome Back from Malmo!

We hope that you enjoyed seeing Malmo with us. Now that we are back in Copenhagen, you can follow us around for the rest of the day.

Evening in Copenhagen

When we returned from Malmo, we took a different route back to the hotel from the train station. We crossed the street in front of the station which brought us to the entrance to Tivoli Gardens. It would have been nice to have been here in the summer, for Tivoli is supposedly an amazing place. (There are also other famous gardens in Copenhagen, and Fred would have loved to see them in bloom.)

We walked around the corner and down the street alongside the gardens, and had the good fortune to pass a Chinese noodle house that Greg had been to before elsewhere in Europe, and he said we just HAD to try it for dinner (which we did). Then we walked through some of the same city streets that we'd traversed yesterday, coming out in front of the Torvaldsen Museum.

Past the museum and along a canal brought us to a bridge over into the commercial district, and again we retraced some of the streets we'd walked yesterday morning. We came out in the open plaza in front of the Symphony Hall. This is where we found the ice rink, and where I took the movie that will appear below.

But instead of going directly back to the Strand, we walked over to the head of the Nyhavn Canal, usually a bustling, busy place in the evenings (although more so in warmer weather). We walked along the canal past a pancake and sweets vendor and an open-air restaurant, whose menu I found intriguing. There was also a woman selling lighted lanterns and other decorations, presumably for the Christmas season.

We crossed a bridge over the canal to get back to the area of the Strand.

During our walk back from the train station, we took a number of other pictures. If you will click on the thumbnail images below, you can have a look at them:

This movie shows you the same square that we've walked through each day here in Copenhagen, but this afternoon the lights are on and the ice rink is in use. Watch it using the player at left.

As I said earlier, after we relaxed for just a while, the three of us walked out again and over to that noodle house Greg wanted to eat at. The food was quite good, and the place was packed. Not exactly a Scandanavian meal, but it was just what we needed. Then it was back to the Strand to get to bed early. Our flight to Barcelona is at 8AM tomorrow, so we have to leave the hotel about six.
