New England Trip Day 12
Driving from Pittsburgh to Nashville

Today is just a driving day. Although we saw a lot of stuff as we drove along, we didn't take any pictures to speak of. So I'll just show you the route that we took today to get from Pittsburgh to Nashville.

This morning, we stopped and had breakfast and then headed down Route 60 to pick up I-79 south again.

I-79 took us pretty much straight south through Pennsylvania, and we crossed into West Virginia at Morganton. There, we simply continued on I-79, now southwest.

I-79 now angled southwest through some very pretty mountain country, and we followed it all the way to Charleston. There, we picked up I-77 south. Just outside of Charleston, we stopped for a late lunch.

From Charleston, I-77 heads almost straight south. The section to Beckley is the old West Virginia Turnpike that I remember taking numerous times when I was little and we were driving from Charlotte to Muskegon. It is not really up to Interstate standards, but there is no room to expand the roadway. There are two lanes in either direction (except for one small stretch) but no median. There were tunnels and such and it was an interesting drive.

I-77 opened up south of Beckley, and we took it all the way into Virginia at Bluefield. Then it was another stretch south to Wytheville, VA, where we picked up I-81. I-81 angled southwest again and crossed into Tennesee at Kingsport. By now it was late afternoon, and we were planning where to stop for the night. I had cell service so we made a reservation west of Nashville.

I-81 took us through extreme western Tennessee, all the way to Knoxville. At Knoxville, we left I-81, which turns south at that point, to pick up I-40 west. Then we continued almost due west through Tennessee to Cookeville, the town where we had lunch after hiking at Burgess Falls last June.

We continued west on I-40, a road we'd traveled before. We went around Nashville on the bypass, and picked up I-40 again on the other side of the city. Some distance further on, we saw signs for a Mexican restaurant right by the highway, so we stopped there for dinner. And then it was only a few minutes more to the Super 8 motel in Dickson, TN.
