August is one of those "birthday months" in our circle of friends. Ron Mathis has his birthday on the first of August, and Fred's birthday is on the sixth. It has been our custom to gather at Ron Mathis' house up in Plano on the Sunday nearest to the midpoint between their birthdays so that we can celebrate both of them together.

We do the birthdays on Sunday rather than Saturday so that Chris, Ron's former partner, can attend- he works until late on Saturdays but is off on Sunday-Tuesday. This particular Sunday just happened to fall on Fred's birthday.

In truth, the birthdays are just an excuse to get the group together. Jay usually fixes a nice supper while I provide the cake and ice cream. Ron's house is ideal for hosting parties like these, since he has the pool, the pool table, and plenty of space to roam around. But I think the real reason they like to host is that they don't have to worry about their smoking, since no one else in our circle allows smoking in their houses.

We did the usual cards, serious gifts (usually just between Ron and Jay and Fred and I) and gag gifts. At this particular gathering, the only missing person was Barbara, who happened to be in Midland.

The pictures I took this particular day were not very good. I thought there was enough light to get by without the flash, but I was wrong. So there is not much need to show you large versions of the pictures, so I have reduced them down and will present them below.
