Tom is very political, and of course this next year is going to be a critical one, with the elections of 2006 hinging on how dissatisfied people are with what's going on in Iraq and elsewhere. There is no Presidential race next year, and that usually means that people are more involved on the local level- and that is where Tom puts his energies.
The two of them dropped by my house in the late morning, and we drove over to Fair Park where the picnic was being held. The gathering is actually a chance for candidates for various local offices to "meet and greet" the party faithful. And there were lots of them- from School Board to State Senator and everything in between. You can see we've already been plastered with buttons and stickers.
We spent about ninety minutes there, having some barbecue and stuff and watching Tom yak with all the folks he knew. Fred and John were sitting right across from me having their lunch; they were talking mostly plants and gardening (John and Tom are both avid gardeners and Fred is a font of knowledge for both of them). We were all being constantly interrupted, gently, with petitions, materials, candidates dropping by, and so on but heck, there's no free lunch.
When I could get Tom to sit still for a little while, I got Fred to take a picture of me and Tom having our own lunch. Tom was really in his element, and it was an enjoyable couple of hours with them. Afterwards, if I recall correctly, we went to a movie over at City Place.
