Walking Las Olas

Well, this is the day that Frank and Joe have to leave and head back to Leakey. They have a stop on the way to San Antonio and then an hour's drive from there, so they had to leave early in the afternoon to make it home by nightfall. So, we've all gotten up early and gotten ready, and then gone down to Las Olas to walk along in the cool sunshine and get a bite to eat. That's Joe and Frank on the bridge over the Schimmering Canal over by the Northern Trust Bank on Las Olas- just about two blocks from the condo. Fred got another good picture of Joe and Frank on Las Olas taken just a bit before the bridge, and I got a different view of them in my own picture. (You can see that picture here.)

From the top of the bridge, here are Joe and Frank looking over at Stork's Restaurant where we went down to have a bit to eat and sit by the canal. Then it was time to walk back to the condo, although the guys got sidetracked a couple of times to look at plants and flowers. Here, they are walking back from examining some plants near a parking structure off Las Olas.

When we got back to the condo, Fred got two good pictures of Joe looking out over the river; you can see one of them here and a more artistic one here. And while Frank and Joe were bringing their things down to the car, Fred snapped a picture of me talking with Jack Fontaine. Then it was time to go.

Frank and Joe Depart

Just before we left the condo, I asked Jack to come downstairs and take a picture of the four of us by the river. It took a couple of tries, but Jack did get an excellent picture of the four of us by the New River. Then, reluctantly, it was off to the airport.

We got to the terminal in plenty of time (one of the best things about Fort Lauderdale and my condo's location is that the trip to the airport is never more than fifteen minutes- even at rush hour) and got them all checked in.

What with security the way it is these days, we couldn't go out onto the concourse with them, so we had to leave them at the entrance to the security checkpoints. And so our last picture was this one of Frank and Joe in the Fort Lauderdale airport.

It was a great visit, and we were sorry to see them go. But we had only one more day ourselves.

Afternoon Beach Walk

We got back from the airport about two-thirty, and thought that we would take a walk from the condo to the beach. it was a lovely afternoon, only slightly warm, so it was a very pleasant walk. From the condo, we walked over to Las Olas, and then just turned east to the beach. We walked along past the shops and stores and the Floridian, and out across the finger islands to the Las Olas Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway.

Up on the bridge, we stopped to take a look at the boat traffic on the Intracoastal and just relish the afternoon sunshine. I made a movie of the boat traffic that you can watch with the player below, and also snapped a picture of Fred atop the bridge.

For his part, Fred waited until we'd gotten down to the other side of the bridge to make his own movie of the Intracoastal that you can watch with the player at left.

When we reached the beach, we walked north to Sebastian Beach and sat on the seawall playing a few games of backgammon on the set I brought with me while doing some people watching. Later in the afternoon, when it got cooler, we gave up on the backgamman and walked back down along the beach to Las Olas. Along the way, Fred made one of his best movies to date of us walking along, showing the vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and taking in the variety of activities that goes on during season on a Saturday afteroon at the beach. When we got to the intersection with Las Olas, Fred made one more movie of the activity at the beach, and you can watch that particular movie with the player at right.

Then it was back to the condo to relax before having dinner with Ron and Leroy and going out afterwards.
