Miscellaneous Pictures for 1972

On this page I want to put those pictures I took during the year that were not in conjunction with a particular trip or event.

Tornado Season in the Midwest

On day in April, we had some real "weather" come through Indianapolis, and that weather included two or three tornadoes. None was near me, apparently, and the ones here in Indiana didn't cause much damage, but the sky was certainly threatening:

Groovin'

One of the friends I made in Chicago was Kerry Kenny, a stewardess for American Airlines. She was a close friend of Steve Deutsch, and that's how I met her. She and a couple of other girls often did things with Bill Tobe, Steve and Keith, myself, and others in our circle. She lived just down the street from me, and one afternoon when we got back from doing something, she relaxed by listening to some of the music I have on reel-to-reel tape:

Thanksgiving

Looking back on them, I can report that these two pictures mark the beginning of a tradition. My Mom had always cooked a Thanksgiving Turkey, but of course when I went into the Army, I didn't really have the facilities to cook one myself. Last year, at Fort Harrison, I finally had my own kitchen, and I experimented with a small one- but it was just for me. I followed my Mom's recipe for the turkey and stuffing, and it turned out well.

So this year, my first year in Chicago, I have cooked my first Thanksgiving Dinner for guests- in this case, Bill Tobe, Keith Asper, and Steve Deutsch. The kitchen was small and the dining table barely adequate, but everything turned out well:

Sitting around my small table on Barry Street are (from left), Bill, Keith, and Steve. I fixed the turkey, my Mom's stuffing, and green bean casserole, and each of the other guys brought a dish as well. We had plenty, and there was a lot left for the freezer.

As turned out to always be the case, the kitchen is often a disaster area after one of my Thanksgiving Dinners. I will have larger kitchens in the future, but it will always seem as if there is never enough room.

NOTE:
In the narrative I wrote in 1979, I commented that I had done Thanksgiving Dinner for one set of friends or another every year since 1972.

NOTE:
I am actually creating this page in 2019, and I can report that in the 45 years following the two pictures above, I cooked a Thanksgiving Dinner- the full spread- every single year save two. In the early 1980s, I happened to have to teach a class in Canada that was held during the week of Thanksgiving, as they don't celebrate it there. And in 1991, Grant and I were on a cruise over Thanksgiving, so I didn't cook a turkey that year, either. 2016 would be the last year that I cooked a full Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving in my own kitchen. Beginning in 2017, Fred and I started going down to San Antonio to visit Prudence and Ron for Thanksgiving, and Karl would do the turkey. And this year, 2019, Fred and I will again be on a cruise over Thanksgiving, so we will have to see how Viking Cruise Lines does Thanksgiving.

Since I have relied for so many years on having a freezer full of turkey dinners to last me until the next Thanksgiving, I have started a new tradition- that of cooking my own turkey on Christmas instead.
